Looking for something fun and different to do with the family this Mother’s Day weekend? Join the Northern Forest Canoe Trail and Friends of Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge for a relaxed half-day paddle on the beautiful Missisquoi River.
Held in conjunction with the Refuge’s Migratory Bird Weekend, this easygoing 3-hour community paddle will feature short stops along the way to learn about river ecology, migratory birds, wildlife habitat, and the importance of protecting the waterways that flow into Lake Champlain.
On the river, we will learn about the importance of a healthy watershed on the surrounding environment by directly observing critical migratory birds in sensitive habitats. We will discuss threats to our rivers & lakes such as pollution, invasive species, and human impact. Along the way, we will introduce everyday stewardship tactics participants can "take home" to help promote the health of our waters.
We will meet at an access point along Mac's Bend Road off of VT-78 around 1:45 pm.. to be on the water by 2 p.m. This trip is welcoming to paddlers of all experience levels and is a great way to connect with your local river while spending time outdoors with family, friends, and fellow community members.
Participants should bring their own canoe or kayak, paddle, PFD, water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. Limited paddling gear may be available thanks to support from the Lake Champlain Basin Program Small Education & Outreach Grant.
Online registration is required.
